Data Protection Act

The Act imposes obligations on all manner of organisations, including local councils, that keep personal information. It also gives rights to individuals to know what information is kept about them.

Unless they are exempt, a local council that processes personal information may need to notify the Information Commissioner. This is not difficult and costs only £35.00. However it is important that staff with access to personal information are aware of their responsibilities.

Freedom of Information Act

The Act applies to all public bodies, including town, parish and community councils. They are required to have a Publications Scheme and to respond to requests for information within a specified time and in accordance with other requirements. Our experience shows that many local councils have yet to get to grips with the Act.

We can offer advice and guidance as well as training.
