Vic Quayle is a Manxman and has lived in the
Isle of Man, Yorkshire, Liverpool before
moving south to London when seven years old. He
lived in Wimbledon and went to Kingston
Grammar School before starting his training
to become an environmental health officer.
After qualifying as an environmental health
officer he worked in London before moving to
Surrey and took a keen interest in the new
Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 when
it first came into effect. He was soon
authorised as an inspector and when required
served improvement and prohibition notices
and took prosecutions. He also started
writing on health and safety subjects in the
monthly journal of the Chartered Institute
for Environmental Health and continued to do
so every month for seven years. Vic also
obtained a Diploma in Municipal
Administration.
He was now working as a Group Environmental
Health Officer in a London Borough with
responsibility for a team of inspectors
dealing with food safety, health and safety,
licensing and registration. He also wrote
several guides to environmental health
subjects for Shaw and Sons Ltd.
Vic left local government in 1988 to set up
one of the first electronic newsletters –
Environmental Health Briefing – targeted
mainly at local authorities. He later
published Health and Safety Briefing in the
same format. In addition Vic became Managing
Editor of the Barbour Index range of fifteen
full text regulatory sector information
systems publishing huge indices for over
40,000 authoritative and official
publications. These included UK and European
legislation and guidance, codes of practice,
British Standards, and other publications
from notable sources.
Consultancy work with Technical Indexes saw
Vic develop their first CD ROM and online
full text information services for the
health and safety industry.
In recent years Vic has worked as an
independent consultant dealing with
immigration work, the Licensing Act 2003 and
other regulatory matters affecting small
businesses. He has also worked as a parish
clerk for two Surrey local councils.
When not
working Vic has been a member of Guildford
Lions Club for more than 25 years and was
President in 2000/01. He is also a keen
rally driver and has had an International
Competition Licence and competed in Europe
and South America. He often links his
rallying to charity fund raising.
Vic is
married to Pam and they have two grown up
daughters and a young labrador.
